The Wire Lamp – Verner Panton's luminous addition to the Pantonova furniture series
The Wire Small table lamp by VERPAN captivates with its unusual design principle. A lamp base made of chrome-plated metal wire, precisely crafted without welded seams, transitions into a plastic hemisphere that shields the bulb. The bulb sits in the centre of a chrome-plated metal reflector that directs the light towards the hemisphere. Only when the light is switched on does the Wire Lamp reveal the translucency of its lampshade. This creates a wonderfully glare-free, soft light that lends the surroundings a high degree of cosiness. The plastic hemisphere is removable, making it easy to insert and change the bulb.
Verner Panton was an excellent furniture designer. With the Pantonova series, which he designed and produced in 1971 for the Varna restaurant in Aarhus, Denmark, he created a range of avant-garde furniture pieces, all of which consisted of parallel wire rods and open side panels. The various seating furniture in the Pantonova series is complemented by shelving systems, tables and various accessories, all of which can be freely combined with each other. Pantonova expresses Verner Panton's design concept of never seeing just the individual object, but rather incorporating the entire space into the design. A year later, in 1972, the Wire Lamp was the perfect addition to the Pantonova furniture series. The design of the table lamp echoes the construction of the furniture and rounds off the design concept of this series as a cosy light source.
