VL45 Radiohus designer pendant light by Vilhelm Lauritzen
In the 1940s, the renowned Danish architect Vilhelm Lauritzen designed lights for the radio building in Copenhagen. The resulting pendant lights were revived in 2016 by the Danish manufacturer Louis Poulsen under the name VL45 Radiohus, featuring a design faithful to the original and using the original materials.
The pendant light has a lampshade made of handblown opal glass, consisting of three layers: The inner and outer layers are made of transparent, glossy glass, whilst the middle layer is made of white glass. The lampshade has an opening at the bottom through which a downward-facing beam of light is produced. The opal glass is also gently illuminated from within, so that the lampshade is lit from all sides, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
Vilhelm Lauritzen, who designed, amongst other things, Copenhagen’s first airport and the Nørrebro Theatre, was one of Denmark’s most significant architects. In his lighting designs, he combined strong and softer light to create an interplay of contours and nuances.
