Foscarini Spokes 1 – LED pendant light with a cage-like design

Like a birdcage, Foscarini's Spokes 1 LED pendant light seems to want to keep the light captive. Its voluminous cage shade, made of filigree round steel tubes, evokes associations with the spokes of a wheel. These also served as a source of inspiration for the creators García and Cumini when naming the product, as "spokes" means "Speichen" in German. Spokes 1 is more air and space than material and mass – its resulting lightness is the hallmark of the product series.

From a technical point of view, Spokes 1 impresses with its fascinating lighting effect. An aluminium disc is located in the centre of the underside of the cage lampshade, which is painted with matt epoxy powder – this serves as both the housing and heat sink for the DALI-dimmable LED chips. These cast a spotlight onto the surface below and simultaneously illuminate the voluminous lampshade. The concentrated, relatively small beam of light contrasts sharply with the volume of the lampshade. The cable supplying power to the LEDs has been cleverly integrated into one of the metal struts so that it is not visible from the outside. The pendant light is held by a thin stainless steel suspension, which allows the bulbous body of the pendant light to appear to float in the room.

Vicente García Jiménez and Cinzia Cumini designed a series of lights in 2015 for the Venetian lighting manufacturer Foscarini. In its designs, the García Cumini studio always attaches great importance to technological innovation paired with artistically creative forms of expression.
